Shanghai Ocean University has been accepting overseas students since 1955. It maintains close partnerships with universities and international organizations from the US, Japan, Russia, Australia, and South Korea. SHOU is also a long-term partner in key international programs such as the China-US Cooperation Program for Marine Biological Resources, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, the Asian Fisheries Society, and the International Center of Living Aquatic Resources Management.

Overseas students live at the International Students Apartment Building. The public common areas include a study lounge, an activity room, as well as kitchens and laundry rooms. All rooms are equipped with an air conditioner, beds, desks, wardrobes, Internet/telephone outlets, and other basic necessities.
